In the great square of the Registan, a lone balloon seller crosses the floodlit plaza, a bright cluster of red balloons held against the night. He moves so lightly that he seems to dance, the one spark of color in a sea of stone. Around him rise three madrasas of Samarkand, their tiled facades and domes glowing after dark, six centuries of Timurid craftsmanship still standing along the old Silk Road.
This is human vitality in the places the Silk Road built, the ordinary moving through the monumental. Samarkand's tilework provides the context for centuries of cultural continuity, and the single seller, balloons aloft, reminds us the square is still lived in, not only preserved.
